Color Modes in Photoshop

While working in Photoshop, it’s quite important to select an appropriate Color Mode based on the nature and purpose of task we perform. Color modes determine the file size, number of channels and number of colors to be used in an image. Not only this, but the file format, you save your document in, also depend a lot upon which color mode you are currently using. Additionally there are a range of filters which are not available in particular color mode e.g. Filters like ‘Filter Gallery’, ‘Vanishing Point’, ‘Artistic’, ‘Brush Strokes’, ‘Sketch’, ‘Texture’ along with few more filters are not available in Lab Color Mode.

Every color mode has its own significance and is used for a specific task.

So what these color modes are and how to decide which color mode to be selected for a particular task? I shall focus a light on this and introduce you with the details and importance of each color mode in this article. So let’s start our journey.

Photoshop offers eight color modes:

  1. Bitmap
  2. Grayscale
  3. Duotone
  4. Index Color
  5. RGB
  6. CMYK
  7. Lab Color
  8. Multichannel

I will explain them below.
